To trade stock online you fill out an account application form for an online brokerage account (at a firm such as Scottrade) then send it to the brokerage firm.
At Scottrade there are NO account maintenance, service, or inactivity fees.
Deposit funds into your account ($500.00 minimum to open an account at Scottrade).
Once the funds are credited to your account by the brokerage firm you can buy stock.
